Sabino Canyon House and Sky

Cold in the desert. Cold in the West. Cold in the East. Cold in the Middle. Let's all get together and knit an Icelandic sweater for the entire country, eh? I hear that there is another storm racing up to New England. My portion of the sweater will be cobalt blue and cadmium yellow medium. What are your colors?

This painting is one from last week. This is 36" x 36," oil on canvas. It has a little sister, which I'll post some other time. I'm getting ready for the next Tucson Artists' Open Studios coming up March 13th and 14th. Yikes. February is a short month. And, there is a storm heading our way in the desert too.

Don't you just love winter?!

Hi Melinda,

Isn't this just astoundingly good, and BIG. I am blown away by it -- I love the whole thing -- great sky, great everything. Yum.

I love the big juicy canyon colors and sky. And the fact that it's big! I like your sweater idea. I think my color would be pink brown!

Great swoopy-bloo sky!

I'll do red.

I love YOUR colors, Melinda and this painting is magnificent. The calligraphy of the clouds seems to be scrolling distant mountains across the delirious blue sky and I love the house arching to meet that upsurge of space.
Although I love and appreciate all season , if
truth be told, I long for Spring, for renewal, for the elixir of youth for infinite faith, wisdom and confidence in myself and in the beneficence of man/womankind. If green symbolizes hope then I love green as in Romance Sonambulo, (poem by Lorca) also Cezanne’s greens and all his lush sensual variations of them.
If we could weave that into the sweater I'd be quite pleased.

Ya-hoo, SamArtDog! I love, love, love red. Good color.

Glad you like the "bloo."

Thank you, thank you for your thoughtful comment, Marcia!

My response to Lorca's poem and your great suggestion:

I should want green,
a luscious green so lovely
that eyes become clear with the radiance of health--the picture and texture of light through water on newly sprouted leaves.

Yes, I should want green
as the foundation
as the backdrop
as the weft in a sweater's pattern.

Warm wishes!

Hi Melinda! Love your complementaries in this one. This painting has a sense of the land where you live, glowing, big and bright.
oh, and make my sweater color a light, slightly neutralized violet.

Hi Loriann,
Thank you! I'm glad you like these colors. They're quite different aren't they from your region right now.

Yes, definitely, your color will add nuance and beauty.

Stay warm!!

S.C.H.& S. is a GREAT BIG GEM!!! Oooh the colors, the clouds, the composition, and again, the colors...
I'm going to have a sweater with oranges and pinks and reds and yellows and ambers and and bits of green and blue turquoise and I'll have a bunch of bracelets and a necklace and earrings to go with it! Melinda, I love your painting!!!

Oh, Linny, I can see you wearing all of these colors. And...you'll do so beautifully, with elan!

Thank you so much.

Melinda
Thank you for your recent comment on my blog!
I read a lot of Lorca when I was a teenager and in my twenties. I had an all consuming fascination and fondness for Spanish music then as well. And still do.
Roy Campbell has a very good translation of Lorca’s poetry, which I have somewhere. But I no longer have the Penguin edition that had his essay on duende.
That said, I really love your poetry and your painting because you have that true liberating poetic voice that informs both your language and your imagery.

Hello Jean,
I'm so happy to hear that my painting helped you forget about the cold weather--just what I hoped to do!

Thank you for your kind comment! Stay warm.

You're very kind, Marcia. I do not think of myself as a writer or poet, but sometimes I have dreams...

It was such a joy to study poetry at the University of Arizona. It was like eating truffles without the consequences.

Thank you and virtual hugs!
