Tucson Artist Melinda: Windy Point...And, I Do Have One

Image © 2010 Melinda S. Esparza But, that doesn't mean a screed of unusually complex meanderings will follow. No, it's been really windy around here, and I've heard it's been extremely windy nearly everywhere around the states, globally, too. How windy was it? Why it was so windy on Saturday that the furled umbrella six feet from our house became unfurled and landed on our roof! Really. This 8" x 8," oil on artists' board, painted in a hurry, is in response to that gale. As I was blown around the internet recently, I laughed and laughed at Kathryn Law's pie chart (her work is brilliant--have a look), read that the heat is back on at the Mabel Dodge Luhan House (been worrying about New Mexico), read a great post about art collector, Roy Neuberger at Art in the Studio, watched some "Who Do You Think You Are?" with Gwyneth Paltrow, which sent me back into the seductive world of genealogy research, updating some family tree data, and pondered the poignant question posed by art tourists in Miami: "How do you get important?" at The Madness of Art. Now. Back to work. In the studio, not 'random web surfing.' Hope you are all painting as much as you want.

May I keep them, Marcia?! There's plenty to go around and I know you have them too.

Thank you so much. You've made my day.

A windy painting, indeed, and those orange blobs seem to be hovering about 3 inches above the surface! How do they do that...? What fun! And thanks for all the links to bring me back from the chaos of relocation. Just what I needed!

I'm so happy to hear that, Donald. And, it's clear that you are ready to get back to work.

My approach lately has been to paint something I'm not happy with, scrape the heck out of it, add more paint, scrape some more, and finally, pour some paint. This does seem to produce the floating orange blobs you mention. Kind of a neat effect, yes?

Best wishes in your new digs! I'm heading over to check on your fabulous work.

Sometimes it takes a painterly tantrum...with joy, of course (Snort)! :-)

Thank you, Linny! You are an inspiration.

I'm blown away. There, I've said it, and I've saved everyone else the embarrassment.

Love those paint splashes and streaks. So much energy! (This wild weather is producing some wild paint.)

I've not been painting, but I have been working hard on art. Will be able to post some of it eventually...

Melinda said...

Thank you, Edgar, for doing that (you usually do, now don't you? ;-)

Since you were the one who had to climb up to get the umbrella, I'm very glad that you weren't literally blown away!

Keep scratching away!

I'm blown away as well (Little Sir Echo me)...what wind...what gusto...what COLOUR...how does that gal do it without taking off?!!!

Melinda said...

Ha, ha, "Little Sir Echo!
How does she do it? She stayed inside, safely watching the trees bend and listening to the umbrella fly!

Thank you so much for your kind comment.

I'm sorry about your rough January but it seems like you're going full force now. This painting so captures the feeling of wind (my least favorite weather element). I really hate the wind and especially when it's hot and windy, which always reminds me of both the last big earthquake and the fire that burned down the Oakland hills (including my sister's house). I enjoyed catching up on your blog.

It's windy alright! What a great plant form!
Don't worry about NM, it's alright over there. :)

sent you anote to your other email... Hope to talk to you soon.

Melinda said...

Thank you, Jana. I'm with you. I really dislike windy days. It's really unpleasant and really hard to do anything outside.

Sounds like you understand completely how a bunch of things happening all at once can cause a lot of confusion and dismay.

I'm so glad that you are there in the Bay Area doing such good work and in better circumstances too. Hope your sister is alright as well.

Best wishes always.

Thank you, Jeffrey! That's about as wild as I get...

How do you handle windy days where you are?

I think you're very brave in all that cooler weather where you are.

Melinda said...

Hey Karen!
Thank you so much. Ah, well, NM is always alright in my book. Wish I could be there this summer when it's blistering hot here.

Yes, I just answered your email, and hope we can work something out.

You know, I think of you as a neighbor now...

The wind has been far too gentle where i am.
Random web surfing sure is fun, it's a great piece of artwork

Thank you, Arts Web Show.

I agree. Random web surfing is fun and, well, distracting: from windy weather, work, etc. But, we do get a payoff--discovering other artists!

Thanks for stopping by.
